Quarto, finely bound in modern full crushed Morocco decorated in gilt, spine in compartments with raised bands, gilt lines and lettering; speckled edges; pp. vi; 204, with 100 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates by Joseph Smit; internally clean, a magnificent copy. A fine book introducing newly recorded species of American birds to a scientific readership, authored by Sclater, Secretary of the Zoological Society of London, aided by distinguished ornithologist and herpetologist Salvin. It was originally issued in thirteen parts between 1866 - 1869. The most recent copy at auction achieved GBP 11,970 (Sotheby's, The Library of Henry Rogers Broughton, 2nd Baron Fairhaven, 18 May 2022, lot 199).
