Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine. 12mo. 319 pages. Portrait of Thoreau on frontispiece. First edition, one of 1,558 copies printed. Protected in mylar. Original publisher's blue-green BD pebbled cloth with blind-stamped borders and center wreath. Spine lettered in gilt. Brown-coated end papers. An outstanding, unsophisticated copy. Front and rear cloth boards still have original sheen, spine not as much. Top and bottom of spine and all corners and edges are in excellent condition showing almost no wear. Interior joints are not cracked. Original book sellers label from Salem on free end paper. Previous owner's name with "Christmas 1863" noted. Very light offsetting from frontispiece through tissue guard to title page which is common for this book. Interior is as clean as the day it was printed. Book is tight, square and solid.
