About This Item

New York & [Jamaica, NY]: Peter Henderson & Co., 35 & 37 Cortlandt St., [Quadri-Color Co.], 1927. 4to. 204 pp. With 10 colour plates, numerous green-tinted text illustrations, green-tinted pages in sections, 100’s of text photo illustrations, diagrams and advertising. Colour-illustrated softcovers, cover art on front cover of the John Marshall house garden at Oak Hill, VA, and lush flower garden back cover, raised & embossed lettering front cover (minor shelfwear, rubbing, some minor soiling, uniform light toning as usual), still VG- copy, w/ laid-in TL to W.H. Haley in S. Jacksonville, Florida on illustrated letterhead, w/ printed order envelope. First edition of this scarce and beautifully illustrated Jazz Age Peter Henderson seed catalogue. Henderson (1822-1890) founded his seed business in 1871 with son Alfred, and by his death in 1890 built one of the most successful seed companies in the U.S. Alfred continued expanding the business and during the 1890s up through the 1920s the company was mailing 750,000 catalogues a year. Their quality of chromolithograph production, and beauty of the catalogues have made their colour plates highly desirable resulting in most being cut up for scrap books, and collectors over the last century. Of additional interest in this catalogue is the green colour-tinted section on golf course grass seeds, and lawn tennis grass seeds, featuring colour plate by the noted Quadri-Color Co., a noted commercial four-colour printing outfit in Jamaica, NY. Worldcat locates 1 copy (National Agricultural Library).
