About This Item
London: Henry Sotheran & Co., 1878. First edition. Full Calf. Very Good. 8vo. 22 by 14 cm. Title leaf, table of contents, then eleven etchings, each given in two states, one hand-colored, the other, without color, and in each of these etchings is presented on eight leaves, for a total of sixteen plates. Following the plates are many blank leaves which allowed for the binding to have some thickness and a title label on the spine. Thackeray was an accomplished caricaturist, but we should be glad that a Cruikshank he was not, and that in time he chose to concentrate on the written word for his sustenance. Bound in full calf by Bradstreet's. Bookplate with section and shelf lines, but we believe this is for a private library. No other signs that can be interpreted as ex-lib. Spine leather darkened. Chips to spine labels. Tight and clean within.
