About This Item
Edinburgh: Adam & Charles Black. London: Hamilton, Adams & Co. First Edition, 1862.. Hardcover. Very Good. xiii,495,16, (Catalogue), pages. A very good copy indeed in the original blind-stamped and pebble grained blue/lilac cloth. Miller, 1802-1856, from the Scottish fishing village of Cromarty in the North East of Scotland, was a humble born Scottish Lad o' Pairts whose range of intellectual endeavour is reflected in this selection of essays. His scientific and geological work prefigured the work of Darwin and the conflict between his emerging scientific understanding and his strong evangelical religious beliefs may have contributed to the tragedy of his suicide in 1856.
