About This Item
Tokyo,: The Hokuseido Press, 1929. First Edition. Rare. English language text published in Japan. Edited by Sanki Ichikawa and with an introduction by Albert Mordell. This copy is signed by Mordell on the front fly. Tall 8vo, original pebbled maroon cloth gilt lettered on the spine and with gilt crane on the upper cover, and in the original dustjacket. xxxviii, 250pp. Fine copy in very good attractive d/j with a chip at the top of the spine affecting some dust jacket lettering, and a small chip at the bottom crease of the jacket. RARE FIRST EDITION, AND AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY of this collection of Hearn's essay on American literature primarily extracted from the Times-Democrat and from The Item. Not surprisingly the work is especially strong in relation to Southern American literature, and specifically New Orleans. It contains roughly 50 essays and articles written in the decade between 1878 and 1887.
