Featuring Gibbon's first title in English AN ESSAY ON THE STUDY OF LITERATURE (1764) bound together with Sydney's notable title - Defence of Poetry and Observations on Poetry and Eloquence (1787). Two works bound into full brown leather with gilt spine titling and gilt ruling to board edges, 8vo, 168 & 144pp. (light shelfwear, rubbing and dulling to outer extremities, page edges browned with minor foxing to extremities, offset browning from frontis portrait onto Gibbon title page, short note to Sydney title page).
