About This Item

Edinburgh; London: Caledonian Mercury Press for Oliphant, Waugh and Innes, and Longman, Huirts, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1817. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Scarce first edition, metaphysical meanderings of Baron Mackenzie, leading to biological questions about the size of the brain and intelleigence, among other things. Rebound in full mottled leather, gilt rules and cevices front and back, more gilt and red later label on spine. 8vo, vi, (2), 301, foldout plate of outlines of skulls. Covers slightly bowed, as the book has been pressed down after being water-soaked. Some "crinkling" of ;leaves remains, as does light staining to some sections of the book, largely confined to wide margins. Sir George Steuart Mackenzie, 7th Baronet (1780-1848) was a Scottish geologist, chemist, agricultural improver, and author perhaps best known for "Travels in the Island of Iceland" (1807).
