London, Sherwood, Gilbert, and Piper, 1834, First edition. . original cloth-backed boards, original spine paper label worn, joints cracked but holding corner wear, light stains on first few leaves, lacks front blank free endpaper, overall a very good copy with good clean impressions of the plates. . 8vo [23 x 15 cm]; xvi, 124, [15, publisher's ads dated May 1834], [v, ads] pp, 18 plates (lithographs) including 5 foldout, and one illustrations (which is called plate 19), the frontis is plate 2, table. . The author, an engineer, won a prize for this work at the London Mechanics' Institution in 1833. "Steam, all powerful steam', as the work begins, and the steam engine, was the foundation of the industrial revolution, and is here described in detail. The plates are of different types of steam engines and related equipment and applications, including one of a locomotive. The collation of the plates is identical to that of the British Library copy.
