Engraved frontispiece. Cloth well worn and soiled, especially at the joints, edges, tips and corner, some light staining to the textblock else this is a good copy.
The first part if a history of the life and travels of Spenser and his works, then a detailed analysis of The Fairy Queen, with its Arthurian overtones.

Large octavo (25cm); three quarter brown morocco with marbled paper covered boards; spine in six compartments, title and author stamped in gilt; top edge gilt; xii, 514pp, frontispiece. Spine sunned; moderate rubbing about extremities and hinges; surface wear, scuffs and mild soiling to boards. Foxing and dampstains throughout text; some pages uncut; pg.507 has small tear to upper corner, trivial tears and rough edges intermittent. Overall Very Good. John S. Hart, A.M., then principal of the Philadelphia High School, penned this comprehensive essay on the works of renowned 16th century English poet Edmund Spenser. Hart first examines the poet's life, his times, and his shorter poems (e.g., Amoretti and Epithamalion). The second part of the book deals entirely with Hart's detailed analysis of The Fairy Queen, Spenser's most prominent work and one of the longest poems in the English Language.
