Second edition; 12mo, contemporary full calf, double gilt rules on covers, gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, label in 1 (wanting) but impression is clear; very good with some rubbing to the extremities and darkening to the pastedowns. Inscribed to Dr. [James] Jackson on the title page by Wells, and with Jackson's bookplate. "Wells' most important contribution was his meticulous study of the formation of dew and the correct interpretation of his data ... Charles Darwin considered Wells to have been the first to state the theory of evolution by natural selection" (DSB). "For this important work, Wells was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society. His researches on the subject were of major importance in the development of the science of ventilation..." This specific hardback book is in very good condition with a maroon linen with embossed border to the front and gilt lettering on the spine over hard board cover that has sharp edges/corners with minor bumping or scuffing and has a tight intact binding inside at the end papers and outside as well. The spine is sun faded but the gilt title lettering is completely legible. The pages are clean, crisp, unmarked and uncreased with no underlining, highlighting, or notes but with a couple of stamps by the previous owner and a library in Dublin which once housed the book. Although a former library book by virtue of the stamps, there is no card pocket or other typical library flaws. This is a remarkable book and is in very good condition. Wells first believed that dew and frost were the causes of air that was a few degrees colder than the ground. He began to experiment and changed his theory when he realized that a combination of temperature, temperature change, and heat being conducted by various materials on the ground caused the condensate that resulted in dew or frost. vi, 152 pp. 8vo. Brown cloth boards with blind embossed borders, brown leather spine with five raised bands from earlier rebinding, gold embossed titling to spine. Slight darkening of pages due to quality of paper, quite clean overall.
