About This Item

Edinburgh: Printed by John Reid junior, 1702. [8], xxi, [1], 276pp. With six engraved plates. Recent blind-ruled calf, contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Some chipping to margins of title page and first three leaves of text. The sole edition of Alexander Nisbet's (1657-1725) authoritative essay on the scientific system of heraldry. In 1687, abandoning a career in law, Nisbet embarked on a project to produce the most complete work on armorial bearings to date. Lacking the funds required to bring his magnum opus to press, Nisbet applied to parliament for an allowance. As proof of his capabilities he published, at his own expense, the present work. Parliament duly granted him £248 6s. 8d. per year. The fruits of his labours, System of Heraldry, Speculative and Practical, finally appeared in 1722, earning him an enduring reputation as Scotland's greatest heraldic writer. ESTC T135758.. First edition. 8vo.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
