Small octavo (16.5cm.); late 19th-century three-quarter maroon morocco over cloth, gilt spine in five compartments, top edge stained red, decorative endpapers; viii,[9]-301pp. Some scuffing and surface scratches to leather, light foxing to stock, chiefly preliminaries, contemporary ownership signature to title page, else Very Good and sound.
Lesser-known novel by one of Portugal's most prolific authors. The illegitimate son of a poor family, Camillo Castello-Branco (1825-1890) was orphaned at a young age, and began his early career in the 1850s writing a series of Gothic tales. The present volume is one of his last of the genre, published a year following his release from prison for committing adultery with a married woman. By the age of sixty he had written some 240 works and been awarded the title of viscount of Correia Botelho, but with the threat of total blindness as a result of syphilis he ended his own life in 1890.
