About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. First Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Clean unmarked text of 94 pages, vibrant green cloth over boards with black vertical stripe. A small chip missing from spine with minor edgewear to corners and slight indentation to foredge of boards, contents fine and binding tight. This play is a series of episodes, in each of which an escaped convict meets people who will either help or hinder his escape. These people divide on class lines. Captain Matt Denant, an English gentleman gallantly protecting a needy prostitute from an over-assiduous plain-clothes policeman, hits the detective who dies. Denant is sent to Dartmoor prison on a manslaughter rap, and then escapes from a working party. Keywords: GALSWORTHY BRITISH VICTORIAN UPPER CLASS MURDER PRISON ESCAPE DARTMOOR
