Wellington: Banshee Books, 2001. Book. Fine. Soft cover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 107 pages, b/w illustrations. Under the command of Captain William Best, with mate & pilot Captain Jacob Eckhoff. Under charter to the New Zealand Government, she left Invercargill on 24 December 1890 to bring back anyone on Macquarie Island who wished. There had been a party of sealers (9 sealers, and the wife of one of them) who had minimal provisions. The 'Kakanui' picked up 8 men who wanted to leave, but was lost at sea sometime in January 1891, with the loss of 19 lives. See "New Zealand shipwrecks" .
