In 1923 Mr. Lachmann brought the best pieces of his collection to New York, later moving to California and settling in Los Angeles. The collection was loaned by Mr. Lachmann for display at various institutions including the University of California at Los Angeles. The Board of Regents of the University officially approved the acquisition of the LACHMANN COLLECTION on October 17, 1960. A photographic catalogue, The Erich Lachmann Collection of Historical Stringed Instruments (USC Press), was prepared under support of the Allan Hancock Foundation of the University of Southern California. The instruments are kept in playing condition and are played by students in the Music Department. A number of the instruments have been performed upon by prominent artists."
