It was self-published in 2001 and became so popular that Knopf published it in 2003. Paolini continured the series which eventually became the 4-part Ionheritance Cycle. The sale volume is the second print of the first Knopf edition, stated date August 2003 with number line reading 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2. Inscription above title on title page reads 'To Paul' and is signed and dated '03 by author. Blue paper boards bound at spine with black cloth; gold lettering on spine only. Binding tight and square, clean and bright but the book has been read several times and has bumping at top of spine. Unclipped dust jacket has no tears but shows minor wear at top and bottom of spine area. 509 pages. Dedication signed by author.
