He was the son of the hatter Thomas Sharp, whose shop has been depicted with the 'Peeping Tom' character in the window in an engraving after Thomas Rowlandson produced to commemorate Lady Godiva's ride through the city. 'Peeping Tom' was first recorded in the Coventry city accounts in 1773 and the Sharps had a reconstruction of the Peeping Tom in their house as their shop was known to be the residence of this historical individual.
