This book is in new condition. It does not come with a dust jacket. Signed by the author, Reverend David L. Veal.
"In 1870 when the American leather industry developed processes that made buffalo hides valuable, men armed with the fifty caliber Sharps rifle moved onto the plains to begin systematic killing of the herds. By 1873 the hide hunters had shifted their field of operations from Colorado and Kansas to the Texas plains. Soldiers and ranchers did little to prevent, or actively encouraged, the destruction of the Comanche food supply. The tribes comprehended too late the coming disaster. They assembled their forces under Quanah Parker and the messianic figure Eshatai for a last effort to drive back the white man. They put their faith in the magic power of the spirit world which they believed would make Commanche warriors immune to the white man's bullets." Opportunities and Promises: Bishop Garrett from The Episcopal Diocese In Northwest Texas: 1874 - 1990
