About This Item

Springer VS, 2016-07-14. Paperback. Very Good. In German and English. 2016 Springer VS (Wiesbaden, Germany), 5 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches tall trade paperback, viii, 448 pp. Slight rubbing, edgewear and creasing to the covers. Brief prior owner notation (by one of the authors, Malaria researcher Irwin Sherman), on the Dusseldorf conference which forms the basis for this book on the half title page. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked. ~WWW~ [2.0P] Key papers from an important international workshop of the Institute for the History of Medicine in Dusseldorf, focusing on the history of epidemics in current medical-historical research. About 13 of the papers are in English, with some 16 in German. The historically and geographically broad spectrum of topics ranges from source studies on a mysterious disease in medieval Nuremberg, to archaeological research on quarantine measures in Puerto Rico, to a socio-historical perspective on pneumonic plague in Northeast Asia. Unconventional approaches are shown, for example, by research on the 'social epidemic' of road traffic accidents and a medical-historical teaching experiment that combines fact and fiction with student updates of epidemic classics such as the Decameron. The conference proceedings give an overview of ongoing research work by historians, physicians, sociologists, art historians and archaeologists, and prepare new perspectives for the history of the epidemic.
