New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. xiii, 358 pp, in original two-tone cloth binding, top edge gilt. Light dust soiling to boards, small stain on front board, corners bumped, ink notation on front pastedown, ownership signature dated 1890 on front endpaper. Binding sound, text clean. Hapgood (1850-1928) played a significant role in bringing Russian literature to Anglo-American audiences. She translated dozens of books from the Russian and French, traveled to Russia several times, spent time with Tolstoy, and later wrote about him.
