In the "Just Plain Weird" category, consider the man who from about 1925 on baffled the medical and scientific community with his ability to GROW. That's right, this famed sideshow performer appeared to grow inches taller on stage -- hence his nickname, "The Man Who Grows Before Your Eyes." Through the 1950s, Willard continued to amaze and confound, appearing on shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" (6 April 1958). What he signs here is as off-the-wall as what he did: a folded-down promotional broadside, single sheet (printed recto and verso), 27" X 18¼" (folds down to 9" X 6 3/4"), Grand Rapids, MI, n.y. [ca. 1934 or earlier]. Near fine. The front panel, which reads "The / Complete / Refrigerator / LEONARD / a name with more than a half / century of / REFRIGERATION BACKGROUND" in bold orange and black, bears his handsome large inscription in a blank area: "Clarence E. Collection from family trip in 1952 includes original letter from Cunard Line Agents' Bulletin C-16 dated 6/14/52 in very good condition. Two brochures from the Caronia, one artist signature is G.H. Iavis. One book printed in England, one is printed in U.S.A. and the letter is from New York. Minor scratches and wear for the age and the First Class tag for the Cunard White Star Limited to Southampton, First Section is intact with the oriingal string. The Union Benevolent Association was established in 1831 to provide assistance to Philadelphia residents by lending stoves to help heat their homes during a harsh winter, along with wood and coal. The intention was to help the "worthy poor" without regard for religion or race. The activities of the organization have evolved since 1831; today it provides grants to projects to fight poverty. This report contains a list of people who contributed to the Union Benevolent Association for the previous year with the amount given, as well as detailed data about the people with whom the association had worked. The (male) officers of the Association are listed; none of the members of the Ladies' Board of Managers are named, although the majority of the report is theirs. Scarce. Chicago, 1922. Hardcover. Very good. Hardcover double-ring binder, 10 x 8 inches. 26 pages of illustrations, often with multiple drawings on a page, plus 3 charts. Several pages of experiments and notes on food and diet interspersed. Complete, according to the handwritten index, and ca. 1922 based on the Typhoid "death by disease" chart, which ends in 1921. Bottom corner of the front board is worn off and many of the pages are torn at the hole punch and have sustained some edgewear from the haphazard placement, but the pages clean with no interruption to the drawings. Each drawing is stamped by the instructor, J. L. Neil. An incredible group of folk styled biological and anatomical drawings done in ink and colored pencil by Chicago high school student Dorothy Lipsich.
