First Edition, First Issue; Cr. 8vo; pp. viii, 177; frontispiece hand coloured folding map of Australia and Indian Archipelago, also folding map of Cobourg Peninsula, a handsom copy bound in half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, contrasting title labels on spine, title and author lettered in gilt on labels, edges marbled, armorial bookplate of Novar of Raith (Sir Ronald Craufurd Munro Ferguson, Viscount Novar of Raith, Governor-General of Australia from 1941 to 1920, mounted on front endpaper, fine copy. Very scarce detailed eyewitness information on settlement garrison at Port Essington including fatalities, natives, food [or lack of it], health, commerce, descriptions of natives, Dutch establishments, D'Urville, geography, natural history and likely successful commerce including trepang, cotton and cane. Relates Flinders meeting a fleet of sixty Prahus from the Celebes trepang fishing and cites many other sources including Lieut. King. Also information on success and failures of Melville Island settlement, the troubles with settlement at Raffles Bay. The loss of the Lady Nelson and the Stedcombe and shipping movements in and around Torres strait.
