In excellent condition with the exception of a small mended tear on the top right margin not affecting platemark. Image size: 17 3/8 x 13 inches. Gilt frame. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece "Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits," the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent aquatint as a true work of art. Berlin: Friedrich Vieweg, 1793. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (267 x 210 mm). [6] pp., 444 columns, [4] pp. Fine engraved title by W. Arndt and C. Jack after Sprengel and Jack, and 25 engraved plates by J.S. Capieux, A. Wohlgemuth and J.D.H. after Sprengel. 20th-century half calf over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, red-dyed edges (little rubbing of extremities). Text generally quite clean and bright, faint dampstaining to first 4 leaves including title, three gatherings M-O, and a few plates; minor occasional foxing. Provenance: long inscription* in ink on first free endpaper, dated 11 September 1794. ---- Dibner 30; Sparrow 184; Nissen, BBI 1883; Stafleu-C. 12.672; DSB XII, p.588; Norman 1990. - FIRST EDITION. AN IMPORTANT WORK THAT FIRST DEFINED THE FUNCTION OF INSECTS IN PLANT POLLINATION, AND 'PROVIDED DARWIN WITH EVIDENCE FOR HIS THEORY OF EVOLUTION' (DSB XII, p.588). A student of Ernst Ludwig Heim (who also taught Alexander von Humboldt), Sprengel commenced his study of pollination in geraniums in 1787, and the function of insects and the flower's structures in the process, leading him to interpret the 'mystery' of the flower's botanical attributes through pollination and hence reproduction. 'His rediscovery of dichogamy ... led him to one of his major conclusions: "Nature appears not to have intended that any flower should be fertilized by its own pollen". This doctrine, together with the even more important view of the close integration of floral structures with insect visitation, was the first attempt to explain the origin of organic forms from definite relations to the environment' (DSB). However, Sprengel's ideas were not understood or appreciated at the time of publication, and his work remained little-known in his lifetime. It was only when a later generation of botanists investigated the field that the significance of Sprengel's work was understood, as Darwin acknowledged in The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilization in the Vegetable Kingdom: 'Long before I had attended to the fertilisation of flowers, a remarkable book appeared in 1793 in Germany ... by C.K. Sprengel, in which he clearly proved by innumerable observations, how essential a part insects play in the fertilisation of many plants. But he was in advance of his age, and his discoveries were for a long time neglected.

Description:
London: Thomas Cotes, 1640. First edition. Large thick folio, title page, dedication page, preface two pages, author's tributes ten pages, then (ii), 1734 (but actually slightly less as there are several errors of pagination), illustrated with over 2,100 woodcut figures, lacking the extra engraved title page, the 20-page addenda at the rear and the errata leaf, but otherwise complete and very sound. The contents are extremely clean and tight, there is the odd crease and an occasional tiny corner missing but overall in impressive condition. The front and rear endpapers are a little browned and marked, both front and rear hinges are cracked and showing a little silver-fish damage but there is no weakness at all. Full panelled calf, probably eighteenth century but possibly earlier, a little rubbed, a little worn at the edges, scuffed on the upper cover, rebacked fairly recently with a leather spine and red morocco label. Blanche Henrey 286. [ Very heavy - extra postage will be required.]. [John…

Rare complete copy of Keika Hasegawa's Keika Hyakugiku (100 chrysanthemums by Keika)(The British Museum only has Volumes 1 and 2, the Smithsonian only 2 and 3.)75 colour woodblock prints (all published), including eight double-page, from this seminal book on the cultivation of chrysanthemums. Volumes 1 and 2 published in July 1893 and Volume 3 published in December 1903. Chrysanthemum cultivation came to Japan from China in the 8th century and the flower was later adopted as the Emperor's crest. Over the centuries, extraordinary hybrids of elegant shapes and vibrant colours were produced, many of which are recorded in this book.Little is known about the artist Keika Hasegawa. (The name Keika is usually a woman's name.) Active in the final years of the 19th century, he also produced books of patterns for kimono and washi paper such as Biko Zukan (Art Book) 1894, and Kyoka Zuan (Patterns of Kyoto), 1897. Original wraps are grubby and worn, interior slightly browned and edges worn. A few prints with…

Illustrated with 96 very fine engraved plates (including 3 bis plates - XXXIII, LXXVII, LXXXVIII], a double-page engraved map of Sardinia (rather foxed), quarto, pp xii, 606; 562. (ii], + plates volume (96 plates of 114), remarkably clean internally, contemporary half calf and cloth, the spines with raised bands and black morocco labels, slightly rubbed and scuffed, a little wear at the corners. The engravings are by by L. Fea,, S. Botta, H. Mil and A. Nizza after drawings by M. Lisa and J.C. Heyland; there is a presentation inscription, in Latin, in the first volume, from the author to Sir Charles James Fox Bunbury. [Lacking the final volume, which was not published until 1857. The fact that the plates volume is here labelled Volume III suggests that Bunbury received these from the author in 1843, and the final volume was never presented. A very good run of the first five volumes from the New Series of this very rare botanical. Complete with 240 handcoloured botanical plates by Worthington George Smith (212) and Frederick William Burbidge (28)
Flowers include many species of elegant orchids, roses, camellias, dahlias, hyacinths, rhododendrons, pansies, geraniums, and many other popular Victorian garden flowers.
Bernard Quaritch in a General Catalogue of Books in 1874 praises the series for its "beautifully coloured plates" and notes it was already "very scarce."

The Floral Magazine launched in 1861 and introduced exotic flowers from tropical lands as well as hybrids raised in British nurseries. The lithographic plates were dynamic, full-page botanical illustrations in large format Royal or Imperial Octavo size. Unlike the French and… Read More
