Constable, London, 1934. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Good. JOHN CARTER and GRAHAM POLLARD. An Enquiry Into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets, London: Constable, 1934. Octavo, first edition, pp. xii, 398, red cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine, top edge gilt, 4 plates, bookplate of the great collector Albert Parson Sachs, with frequent penciled notes, perhaps by Sachs but not necessarily. Recounts an investigation into one of the most sensational dealer-collector frauds in the history of the book business, in which Thomas Wise, an eminence in the trade, printed pamphlets that he claimed were first editions of well-known works, and managed to palm them off on collectors whose trust he had gained. This went on for years, until Carter and Pollard dug into details such as the composition of the paper and proved that it was made long after the dates Wise had printed in the pamphlets. Condition of this book: Jacket sunned at spine, darkened on both panels. Half-title splitting from hinge, overall good and sound. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text contains minor marks and annotations. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Books on Books; Britain/UK; 1930s; Antiquarian & Rare. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 53921. .

Description:
London: Constable and Co, 1934. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 9" by 6". Unnamed. A lovely first edition copy of this groundbreaking expose of literary forgery. Written by John Carter and Graham Pollard, the work is noted as uncovering the vast amounts of forged privately printed and "pre-first" books and pamphlets that were held in the then-reputable library of Thomas J. Wise, including works by Dickens, Tennyson and the Brownings. A fascinating volume, the work is considerably involved, and brought about revisions in bibliographies the world over. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973), a noted book collector and diarist. Complete with original price-clipped dustwrapper. In cloth binding with gilt detailing and original price-clipped dustwrapper. Externally very smart, with minor shelfwear only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean throughout. Dustwrapper extremely smart with minor chipping and sunning to backstrip. Fine
