About This Item
Philadelphia: Peterson's Magazine, 1881. Very good. 9" x 5 3/4" (23 x 14.5 cm). Single plate of highly detailed engraving depicting a group of Christmas carolers singing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." Drawn by A. Hunt, engraved by Illman Brothers. Printed on lightweight paper. Small stain at edge of art, edge wear and chipping to paper. "Peterson's Magazine was published by Saturday Evening Post partners, Charles Jacobs Peterson and George Rex Graham. With a focus on the domestic and consumer lives of middle-class white women, the pages of Petersons featured fashion, embroidery patterns, sheet music, engravings, poetry, short stories, serialized fiction, recipes, remedies, housekeeping advice, puzzles, and more. While the content of the womens magazine emphasized the womans role as centered on her family, as a wife, mother, and keeper of the household, the publication of Petersons, and other womens magazines, created professional opportunities outside the home for women writers and editors."
