From the author's preface: "The purpose of this book is to provide a one-year's course for students aged about eighteen plus. Its aim is to keep well to the fore those skills utilisable in everyday life as well as desriable in themselves. Beyond question, a wide and readily available vocabulary, a variety in sentence structure and an ability to build substantial, connected and lucid paragraphs are useful and enviable possessions. They are not easily acquired, so that the ground is covered at more than one stage as the course develops." There are 139 exercises in all and separate sections of discussion questions. Three page index at the back. The book is clean with a tight binding and the externals show only very mild shelf wear. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. .
