To prevent unnecessary suits in law; with the benefit of a voluntary register. Directions where vast quantities of timber are to be had for the building of ships; with the advantage of making the great rivers of England navigable. Rules to prevent fires in London, and other great cities; with directions how the several companies of handicraftsmen in London may always have cheap bread and drink. FIRST EDITION 1677, VOLUME 1 ONLY (Volume 2 published in 1681). 8vo, approximately 200 x 140 mm, 8 x 5½ inches, 8 folded plates, pages: [20], 1-71, [1], 97-196, last page blank and last 2 printed pages misnumbered 178 & 179, jump in pagination is in all copies, bound in full contemporary sprinkled sheep, gilt lettered green label to spine, on the first pastedown is the modern bookplate put in by Christie's for the auction sale of Evelyn's books. Head of spine worn with small chip (see image), hinges rubbed, slight damage and scuffing to covers, corners worn with board just showing, inner paper hinges cracked, pale damp staining to lower margins upto page 9 and plate page 109, plates creased and 2 a little ragged at edges, no loss of image, small closed tears repaired to blank sides of most plates to prevent further damage, small repair to lower corner of first free endpaper and License leaf, closed tears to lower margins of last 4 pages neatly repaired, tiny nick to fore-edge of first 6 pages, slight wear to paper of lower corners on pastedowns, 1 plate bound in upside down, small hole to page 134, loss of 3 words, paper fault to page 177/178 with slight loss of print, about 6 words illegible, 2 plates just protruding from text block. A very good copy. Provenance: press-mark M.12 at foot of title page deleted by Evelyn, See: Christie's, The Evelyn Library 1978, Part IV, page 58, No.1600 listing this copy; Geoffrey Keynes, John Evelyn, A Study in Bibliography, page 299, No. 42 listing the books in Evelyn's library.
