About This Item

This is a rare copy of "ENGLAND'S HELICON - A Collection of Pastoral and Lyric Poems, First Published at the Close of the Reign of Q. Elizabeth." 1812 3rd edition (stated); "Printed by T. Bensley for Robert Triphook"; London. This rare 3rd edition follows the original 1st edition of 1600, and 2nd edition of 1614. (Facsimile title pages of the 1st and 2nd editions are included.) "To Which is Added a Biographical and Critical Introduction." The book includes a sonnet from act 4, scene 3 of "Love's Labor's Lost" (1598) by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, titled "The Passionate Shepheard's Song."

From the "Advertisement": The First Edition of this Collection was published in 1600, and contained an hundred and fifty poems. The second possessing nine additional pieces, appeared in 1614. Both editions are exceedingly rare; and their introductory variations and additions are now reprinted."

From the "Introduction": The volume now reprinted contains the best, if not the only collection of the third, or Pastoral division. And it will be difficult to account for the work having so long remained locked up in the repositories of the curious; such being its scarcity, that of the only two editions which have hitherto passed the press the most diligent investigation can very rarely procure the sight of a copy."

Condition:
The book has been nicely and professionally re-bound in modern hardcovers with modern end papers. The original half title page is present, but has detached. The pages are lightly age-toned. The title page has chipping along the perimeter with small pieces missing. Consistent mild foxing to the pages throughout. Tight binding with no cracks. Both covers are firmly attached. There are a small number of instances where a line of text has been underlined in pencil, or a notation or marking in an outer margin has been made in pencil. Overall in Good condition.
