About This Item

New York City, NY: Catholic Information Society, 1947. Softcover 3.25 x 5.5", saddle-stapled in pictorial paper wrappers, 15 pp. [16]. Very good, light wear and rubbing along saddle-stapled spine, additional minor wear and creasing to book and cover wrappers. Eugene Lyons was a child of the Socialist Party of America, raised in red diapers and served in the U.S. Army during World War I. After his service, he wrote about Elizabeth Gurley Flynn's commitment to the IWW and work she did on behalf of the Workers Defense Union. He visited Sacco and Vanzetti often while they were incarcerated, even going so far as to visit Sacco's hometown and meet with his older brother who was mayor at the time. Over time though, Eugene Lyons views radically shifted to the right and he became a proponent of HUAC embracing McCarthyism and denouncing his formerly embraced ideologies. This is his anti-communist tract, questioning the U.S. school system's supposed permission of leftist ideas entering it's curriculum.
