Facsimile Edition of the First edition; Thick 4to; Vol. 1; pp. viii, 698; numerous b/w sketch illustrations, errata; Volume 2; pp. 1009; folding grammatical table, numerous b/w sketches; Vol. 3; pp. 953; numerous b/w illustrations; original brown cloth with title lettered in gilt on spine, minor foxing to endpapers; otherwise very good copies. The first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica was issued serially in sections from 1768 to 1771. The first bound volume of these sections was completed in 1769, the second in 1770 and the third- and last - in 1771. Subtitles "A Dictionary of the Arts and Sciences," the set contained 2,459 pages and 160 copperplate engravings by Andrew Bell.

The Encyclopædia Britannica (Latin for "the British Encyclopædia") is a general English-language encyclopaedia published by Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc. , a privately held company. The articles in the Britannica are aimed at educated adult readers, and written by a staff of about 100 full-time editors and more than 4,000 expert contributors. It is widely regarded as the most scholarly of encyclopaedias. The Britannica is the oldest English-language encyclopaedia still in print.
