About This Item

[hila]:: Philadelphia Maritime Museum. VG, unmarked, illustrated 7" x 10" Paperback.. 1984. ISBN: xviii + 331 pp.. Catalogs: SHIPS. Keywords: CHINA, TRDE, HISTORY, COLONIAL.

Synopsis

"The Empress of China was the first vessel belonging to the United States of America to initiate trade with the Chinese. Largely financed by Philadelphia merchants, but unable to sail from there due to the freezing of the Delaware River, she departed New York Harbor for Canton on February 22, 1784 and returned in mid-May 1785 with a full lading of teas, silk, porcelain, and other exotic Oriental goods. Although historians have often repeated the general story of the Empress of China's trailblazing venture, this book details for the first time the financial tribulations, the human arrogance, and the outright deceit which attended the voyage and many of the people connected with it."
