Printed for John Murray, London; 1816. 'Emma: A Novel. In Three Volumes. By the Author of "Pride and Prejudice"'. 12mo.
Published as 1 of just 2000 at the author's own expense, and at the time proved to be relartively successful for a then unknown author.
These volumes have been well-preserved and are in lovely Very Good to Near Fine condition, particularly for their age. Indeed, there is very little to note about them and any points are very minor. They would be an excellent investment for any book lover or collector.
These lovely volumes are bound in near contemporary green half calf bindings, with gilt lettered leather title labels. The volumes are extremely well preserved, with only the occasional light rubbing and scuffing and very slight fading to the spines, remarkable given the age of these beautiful books. Internally, the pages are amazingly brught and clean and in Near Fine condition. The three half titles have been discarded, as common when books are rebound, and the only points to note at all are that there is some light spotting as to be expected, and in Volume 2, on p. 63/64, there is a small closed tear in the blank fore-margin. There is an ownership armorial bookplate of the Earl of Shannon to the front pastedowns of each volume, and some minor splitting to the hinges between front free endpapers and preliminary blank pages in all 3 volumes, but the binding remains in Very Good condition nad the books are sound and smart.
In all, these volumes are an exceptional piece of literary history, with generation upon generation of readers growing up reading and cherishing this novel. To find a First edition of Emma in condition such as this is incredibly rare, with just a very small number currently available for sale online. As such, this is an incredibly rare piece to add to any rare book collection and is truly an investment for the future.
Please see all photos included, as they form an important part of our description. Please don't hesitate to get in touch for any further information or photographs regarding these special books by one of the most famous and much-loved authors of all time. We are always happy to help and open to offers!

Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
