About This Item

New York, NY The Modern Library, 1931. Hardcover Very Good: shows indications of careful use: light wear to the extremities, but beginning to fray at the lower front corner tip; mild rubbing and faint soiling to the green cloth over boards; the pages have tanned a bit, due to aging; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. No longer 'As New', but remains a sturdy, presentable reading copy. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. 342pp. This work first published in 1918. With a preface by the author. --- Toledano spine 8, with green cloth-covered boards, gilt titling on black spine & cover blocks, black topstain, grey Kent endpapers. Volume bears 1918 date but likely published c.1954. Green cloth over boards. Gilt designs and titles on a rectangular black field at the front panel and backstrip. (Modern Library #212.1). Hardback: Lacks DJ. Four short biographies of leading persons living in the time of Queen Victoria: Cardinal Henry Manning, Florence Nightingale, Dr. Thomas Arnold and Gen. "Chinese" Gordon.

Synopsis

“Discretion is not the better part of biography,” Lytton warns us, and it is with this motto that he paints his portraits of Cardinal Manning, Dr. Arnold, Florence Nightingale, and General Gordon. The caricatures – which represent the world of religion, philanthropy, education, and politics – expose the high Victorian myths, and reveal a slightly darker truth about the leading figures of the era. Some say that he led the world into the next generation, but that claim is essentially over inflated. What can be said is that the line between fiction and non-fiction was blurred. A new genre was born: literary biography.
