The Emancipation Problem in Maryland
by [Slavery; Maryland; Civil War] Mayer, Brantz
- Used
Baltimore, 1862. An offprint from the Baltimore American newspaper, advocating a gradual reduction in slavery and its effect on labor and taxation in Maryland. "Slavery abolished either by immediate or gradual emancipation, and the negroes continuing here, the unfortunate creatures would of course, merely change masters, and instead of being the slaves of individuals, they would become the slave of a social system, with which they would never be permitted to assimilate." Maryland was a divided state during the Civil War, with mixed sympathies regarding slavery vs. trade, and an 1860 census shows a comparable number of free blacks as slaves. Brantz Mayer was an active Unionist during the Civil War.
