Reynard the Fox has been a stable of fairy tale lore for centuries, with many countries, such as German, France, and other Low Countries, claiming the honor of his 'birth-place.' Told as a 'brute-epic', this tale of cunning mischief was finally written and printed during the late 15th- and early 16th-centuries. In fact, some scholars believe the origins of Reynard to have come from the 9th-century!
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a famous German author who is best known for his novels and epic poems such as 'Sorrows of Young Werther' and 'Faust'. One of his less-popular works, curiously, was his edition of the famous fable 'Reynard the Fox'.

1931 Aesop Fables Illustrated by Arthur Rackham Esoteric Fairy Tales Chesterton

Aesop's fables have been printed for centuries and include some of the most famous fables and tales of all time. This first edition features 13 color tipped-in plates of Arthur Rackham art, including the frontispiece. It also has several in-text illustrations in black and white. Many of these illustrations depict animals personifying human qualities in a satirical or humorous manner.
Rackham art is highly desirable and has been used in numerous literary works. However, the illustrations in this printing are particularly notable. According to Hudson,

London: Rapp & Whiting, 1973. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First Printing of the First UK edition which was the first hardcover edition of this title. Original green cloth with gilt titles to the backstrip. Not fine but a VG copy which has a slight lean. Pushed a little at the spine tips but with sharp corners. Minor tanning - or rather, dis-coloration - to the edges of the block but free from owner names, library markings etc. The covers are clean and bright. The dustjacket has the original price of £2.50 at the front flap. There is a small tri-angular chip at the foot of the spine and a small, old sellotape repair to the inside of the jacket above. Minor chip to the laminate of the jacket at the foot also. For best appreciation of condition please examine the accompanying images. Much, much better than it probably sounds this is a very nice example of a very rare book - no spotting/foxing, no previous owner names or library markings etc.
