About This Item
Edinburgh: A. Kincaid & W. Creech, 1774. Hardcover. VERY GOOD. Previous owners' names to FFEP and title page. Front board detached. Some age-tanning and foxing. A bit of flaking, scuffing, rubbing and chipping to soft brown suaded leather boards and spine. A bit musty. Once gilt lettering to spine rubbed away, faint traces of gilt left on raised bars to spine. Dark topstain. No markings in text. 518 pp. "That nothing external is perceived till first it make an impression upon the oran of sense, is an observation that holds equally in every one of the external senses. But there is a difference as to our knowledge of the impression: in touching, tasting, and smelling... That difference in the manner of perceiving external objects, distinguisheth remarkably hearing and seeing from the other senses, and I am ready to show [that] every feeling, pleasant or painful, must be in the mind..." And so begins his discussion on how to fully appreciate and critique literature and theatre.
