London: Cadell and Davies et al., 1799. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. A two volume set of works designed for prospective clergyman, by the Bishop of Winchester, George Pretyman. Complete in two volumes. Second edition. Volume I is lacking the title page. Written by the English clergyman and theologian Sir. George Preyman Tomline who was appointed as the Bishop of Lincoln and later the Bishop of Winchester. In 1803, upon the death of his relative Marmaduke Tomline, Preyman gained a large inheritance and henceforth adopted the name of Tomline. Indeed Tomline gained significant wealth throughout his lifetime, which gained him great influence. This particular volume was designed for 'young students in divinity' who were seeking ordination, and features interpretations of the bible, with numerous examples of religious extracts and articles. This interesting work of christian theology which reveals interpretations of the bible at the turn of the 18th century. In a uniform half calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards, and gilt detail to the spine. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to to the spine, heavier towards the head of each volume, with a small amount of loss towards the head of volume II. Light bumping to the extremities, with a small amount of loss to the leather. Patches of rubbing to the front and rear joints of each volume. Small tide mark to the rear hinge of each volume. Front hinge of volume one is very light strained but firm. Very light spots to the front and rear endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Page are clean. Volume I is lacking the title page. Ink inscription to the head of the title page of volume II. Very Good
