Originally published in Paris in 1791, the first edition is listed as no. 9 in Edelstein's "Thirteen key books in the history of dyeing and bleaching" (Historical notes on the history of the wet processing industry, 1972, p. 85, where he calls this "the first modern book on dyeing and the first general theory of its principles.") This is the second English edition, translated from the second French edition of 1804 by Andrew Ure. There was a previous English translation by William Hamilton in London in 1791. This is the first edition of the Ure translation.
