Woolwich.: John M. Boddy., 1861. 3rd Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Very good. Bound in full calf. Slightly foxed and toned. The book is extensively annotated with expansive hand-written notes and additions in the half-a-page-wide margins alongside the printed text, as well as with typed loosely inserted notes. Also further to the original 234 pages and 40 plates (some folded, some color) of published material have been bound-in to the rear around 200 pages of hand-written material on Gunpowder - 'General Description of Gunpowder', with subheadings such as 'Explosive Power', Advantages of Gunpowder and other Explosive Mixtures', 'Refining Process', 'Charcoal', ' and Manufacturers'.We then have chapters sections headed 'Manufacture of Ordnance', 'Manufacture of Carriages etc', 'Manufacture of Ammunition', tables recording ammunition practice and the findings thereof (round shot, common shell, ricochet) dated Woolwich, 7th Sept, 1863. Lastly, there is 4 fold-out plates to the rear and 1 full page, entitled 'Mode of Breaching a Revetment' (with several diagram figures), 'Armstrong 12 Pr Gun, shewing the Coils etc - scale 1/6' etc. 4to. 11".
