About This Item

New York: William H. Wise & Co., 1926. First Edition . Cloth. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Denslow, W.W.. New York: William H. Wise, 1926. First Edition. Illustrations and decorations by W.W. Denslow. Octavo, 553 pp., tan cloth. Corners bumped, a bit of shelfwear, small bit of lower left corner of paper spine label missing, not affecting letters. A handsome copy, better than very good. An honoring biographical treatment of Elbert Hubbard, noted American author and publisher. In 1895 Hubbard founded an artist colony in East Aurora, N.Y., and subsequently founded there his Roycroft Press, with which he emulated William Morris's idealistic experiment in fine books and hand craftsmanship. Editor of the Philistine magazine and author of the A Message to Garcia (1899), Hubbard - who perished in the submarine sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 - was an American classic personality type, an advocate of and symbol for duty, efficiency, and Yankee "rugged individualism". Saturated with appealing artwork - cartoons and decoration - by W.W. Denslow, illustrator of the true first edition of L. Frank Baums's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. L19n
