About This Item
London: Richard Bentley, 1849. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. First English language edition of this short novel that is considered by some critics to be Cervantes' reply to the criticism Don Quixote received upon its initial publication. This volume has a Preface by the translator, Thomasina Ross, a 98 page life of Cervantes, also by the translator, the text of El Buscapie (50 pages), and 85 pages of notes, also written by the translator. This is a very good copy, in the original brown patterned moire cloth with embossed designs on the four corners of each board, and gilt lettering on the spine. Slight loss to the cloth at spine ends, with a 1" tear in the cloth at the top of the rear gutter. The frontispiece portrait of Cervantes is slightly foxed, as is the facing tissue guard, but otherwise clean pages. Hinges are tight, but there is slight separation of the signatures between the biographical section and the start of El Buscapie. An interesting footnote in Spanish literature, and this is the first publication in English.
