About This Item

London: Macmillan and Company, 1900. Cloth. Very Good. 17.5" by 14". Numerous. A rare and important work on this subject, beautifully illustrated and compiled and edited by Julia Franka, accompanied by an essay of on stipple engravers of the eighteenth century. This work sees an essay of the style of engraving, illuminated by fifty-two plates. Collated, complete with all plates. Plate XXXI has been bound with the incorrect tissue guard, it has a duplicate tissue guard for plate XXIV. Tissue guard to plate XLVII is misprinted as plate XLVIII. Plate XXXVI is bound as the frontispiece, as called for. Written, compiled and edited by the noted author Julia Frankau. Known primarily for her literary works, many of which were published under the pseudonym Frank Danby, Frankau was an incredibly prolific author. This particular work of non-fiction is a work that explores the art of stipple engravers, a work she wrote to fill in the lack of documentation on this particular style. Internally this work is in excellent condition, with bright and vibrant plates. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with loss to the head and tail of the spine, and rubbing to the extremities. Small cracks to the front and rear joints, both to the head and tail of the spine. Dampstaining to the front board, with the odd mark to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Closed tear to the tissue guard to plate XXXV and a closed tear to this plate, not affecting the image. Pages are bright with just the odd spot. Very Good
