London, Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1855, First edition. . rebacked with cloth preserving the original pictorial boards, loss of one letter on spine, gilt decorated spine and endpapers, all edges gilted, corners slightly worn, spine lightly faded, early inscription on endpaper but a clean solid near fine copy. . 8vo [23 x 15 cm]; xii, [i, list of plates], 423 pp, 6 color plates (chromolithographs) including the frontis, illustrations in text. . British Museum of Natural History Catalogue 89 (which copy has only 4 plates). The author, who is most famous for his exploration in search of the Nile, traveled extensively in Ceylon and describes the natural history, villages, peoples, agriculture, etc. The plates are mainly of hunting scenes and wildlife, from the author's paintings. The later editions did not have color plates. A picture of this book is available on request by email.
