About This Item

New York: H.N. Abrams, 1978. Hardcover. VG/VG (scuffs, smudges & edge-wear to cloth boards. foxing to textblock edges; sporadic, fairly light spotted foxing to pages. dustjacket scuffed & scratched; edge-worn; foxing to edges; small puncture to back gutter edge). green cloth boards with gilt artwork on cover, lettering on spine. 306 pages; 246 illustrations w/ 88 color plates; many tipped-in. white, illustrated dustjacket w/ black printing. oversize format: 34 x 41 cm. The page/plate shared by Gas and Cape Cod Evening was removed by a previous owner; page/plate is present and laid-in at its appropriate section, but Cape Cod Evening has detached; both page and plate can be easily secured by capable hands. This jumbo-format volume presents reproductions of the works of prominent American realist painter and printmaker, Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Both in urban and rural scenes, Hopper's spare and finely calculated renderings reflected his personal vision of modern American life. A total 246 works are reproduced, including a number of etchings from Hopper's earlier career, as well. The supplemental text reveals Hopper's development and evolution as an artist. From silent urban scenes to countryside vistas, particular attention is paid to the introduction of the automobile into American life, as well as such modern surroundings as fluorescent lighting, diners, and rail travel, all of which lent unique subject matter to Hopper's paintings. The text provides a comprehensive look at artist's life and includes a bibliography and chronology.
