Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb. Original blind stamped brown cloth, gilt lettered on spine. 17.5 x 11cm. With an engraving of the signing for the letters of the alphabet, and a few other text engravings. Vii,272, pages. Publisher's catalogue of four pages. The catalogue includes an advertisement for a new edition of 'A Paraphrase on the Lord's Prayer' Written and printed by some of the elder pupils in the West of England Institute for the Deaf and Dumb. Very good condition, with only very light foxing of the preliminary pages and just the lightest signs of use to the binding. Mrs Tuckfield was a pioneer of deaf education in the early 19th century, having been drawn to the subject through her experiences with deaf children in her general work in education. She established the Exeter Institution for Deaf Children in 1826, which continues today as the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education.
