Its main aim was to protect prehistoric monuments. since then the concept of what constitutes an ancient monument has been greatly enlarged, and it now includes abbeys and castles, as well as industrial buildings such as iron works. Over 300 monuments of outstanding national importance are in the direct care of the Secretary of State for Scotland. In this volume Magnus Magnusson has collected a group of articles that give an account of the past work on ancient monuments and highlight various sites opened to the public in the centenary year. They tell of the work of archaeological excavation, the complex and skilled tasks of restoration, and the new approaches in presentation and interpretation which help us understand more of the sites that we visit. The book provides an excellent insight into the work of practising archaeologists, and an appreciation of the important work done by the Ancient Monuments Division in protecting our heritage.
