About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1949. First edition, first printing. Published by Jonathan Cape in association with The Book Society in London, 1949. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper is clean and with slight rubbing at the edges, being slightly soiled in places. There is some light separation at the top and tail of the spine, though perhaps rubbing is more accurate. It has been neatly price clipped, but retains the original 15s. price. The boards, in the original publisher's red cloth, are free from notable chips and marks and the gutters intact. Each of the illustrations and maps are present and the internals are free from inscriptions. Overall, this is a very good copy of an increasingly scarce title. A memoir of the author's early career. It is divided into three sections: his life as a junior diplomat in Moscow and his travels in the Soviet Union, notably the forbidden zones of Central Asia; his exploits in the British Army and SAS in North Africa; and his time with Josip Broz Tito and the Partisans in Yugoslavia.
