About This Item
London: Roberts Brothers , 1871. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None . First US edition of part IV of William Morris' epic poem. The Earthly Paradise by William Morris, part IV containing the December, January, and February parts. The epic poem is complete in twelve parts, each representing a month and containing two tales in verse. First US edition, one of one thousand copies printed. A sweeping retelling of a variety of Greek and Scandinavian myths and legends, including the Icelandic saga, initially published between 1868 and 1870. They used a frame story concerning some medieval wanderers in search of immortality. Largely successful, this anthology affirmed Morris as a foremost poet of his day. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally generally smart with some shelf wear, spine and boards bumped to extremities, head and tail of spine lightly chipped, spine cockled due to possible damp, lightly soiled and marked to boards. Previous ownership inscriptions to recto front blank leaf, dated 1943 and undated. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean with some age toning, as usual with the type of paper used. Very Good
