Salem, OR: Frank C. Baker (Oregon State Printer), 1894. FIRST EDITION. Full Leather. Very Good Plus. Quarto.9 1/4 in. x 6 1/2 in. Once half-bound leather (spine and corners), now amateurishly rebound in tan cloth over black pebbled-cloth boards. Original black and red spine labels re-affixed. 719 pp. including Index. Printed form affixed to front pastedown (Oregon Legislature -Twentieth Session - "Senate Joint Resolution No. 5, (Introduced by Mr. Hazeltine by request and adopted). This Resolution decreed that up to 1000 copies of this book be "used and given away by said grand commander to pioneers and veterans of the Indian wars, who have had the largest experience in the early history of Oregon and who pledge beforehand to him to write out and correct all errors and supply omissions, etc...". Previous owner's signature ("B.F. Wells, Manila, P.I., P.O. Dept. 1901) in pencil, to front pastedown. Covers Cayuse War, Rogue River Wars, and The Yakima War. A good, solid copy of an increasingly scarce and important historical resource in Western Americana. Frances Auretta Fuller (Barritt) Victor (pen names: Florence Fane, Dorothy D.) (1826 - 1902) was an American historian and historical novelist. She has been described as "the first Oregon historian to gain regional and national attention." She was known for her books about the West and especially Oregon history.
